My twins just celebrated their sixth birthday, and for every year since they were born, I’ve organized a birthday party for them. It’s the one occasion (besides Christmas) that they eagerly anticipate each year. We discuss their upcoming birthday from the day after one celebration to the day of the next. They are thrilled about every detail, and we always manage to stick to a budget. It’s not about how much we invest — and trust me, it’s not much — but about the memories they will cherish forever, which are invaluable.
I don’t have many memories of my own birthday celebrations with my mom, apart from my twenty-fifth birthday. On that occasion, she brought along her friends, all of whom were in recovery, and they showered me with affection and my favorite ice cream cake. They sang to me and made me feel special, even if it was a bit awkward since they were my only friends that year. It was indeed a memorable day!
As a mother, it’s essential for me to create lasting memories for my children. We typically start planning their birthday about a month in advance. We’re last-minute planners, but somehow, everything comes together — if it works, why change it?
This year, we asked our kids to provide us with a list of three friends each to invite. Once we had their lists, we reached out to parents we hadn’t met yet (thanks to COVID) and sent out invites created on Canva to their kindergarten friends and neighbors.
The party took place at our local beach, with a “beach party” theme. Hosting a child’s birthday at home is fun until it’s time to clean up, which rivals any wild teen party! We ordered pizza and delicious cupcakes from my favorite bakery. Let’s be real, if we’re spending money on a party, the food has to be enjoyable for the planners, too. So yes, I may have splurged a bit on the cupcakes, but hey, I brought them into this world, and I deserve a tasty treat as a reward!
Everyone had a fabulous time, including the parents. We enjoyed catching up with other adults while our kids chatted and played in the sun. The truth is, birthday parties don’t have to be extravagant to be unforgettable. Their first birthday was a simple backyard gathering with pizza and an ice cream cake, just with family and a few close friends. We didn’t need to impress anyone; they were babies! As they’ve grown, we’ve invested a little more in their celebrations; this year, they received their biggest present yet, a Power Wheel to share. However, the actual birthday party was mostly free—just a no-cost venue, pizza, cupcakes, and favors from the Dollar Store.
The essence of celebrating is free. It’s our choices in celebration that may or may not cost us. The beauty of a budget-friendly birthday bash is that there’s less pressure to create a perfect event because we didn’t spend a fortune on it. And it’s clear that a more relaxed host leads to a more enjoyable party for everyone.
Aside from my penchant for fancy cupcakes, our kids’ birthday celebrations give us, as their moms, a moment to reflect on the fact that we’ve made it through another year together, happy and healthy. That alone is worthy of all the cake and pizza in the world. Create those memories — just remember not to break the bank in the process.
