In response to the rise in COVID-19 Delta variant cases, Broadway has announced a new policy requiring all attendees to wear masks and show proof of vaccination before entering any of the 41 theaters in New York City. This mandate affects not only the audience but also performers, backstage crew, and theater staff.

As detailed in a recent press release, patrons must be fully vaccinated with an FDA or WHO-approved vaccine in order to attend performances. The definition of “fully vaccinated” means that at least 14 days must have passed since receiving the second dose of a two-dose vaccine or since getting a single-dose vaccine. Guests will need to present their vaccination proof along with a valid ticket at the theater entrance.

Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League, expressed her satisfaction with the decision, emphasizing that having a uniform policy across all theaters simplifies the process for audiences and enhances their confidence in safety measures. Although this policy is in effect through October, theater owners plan to reassess the guidelines in September for upcoming performances in November 2021 and beyond, with potential adjustments based on scientific data.

Exceptions to the new guidelines include children under 12 and individuals with medical or religious reasons that prevent vaccination. These guests will need to provide a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours or a negative antigen test taken within six hours prior to the performance.

Nick Scandalios from The Nederlander Organization highlighted that the safety of audiences is a priority, and the theater community is dedicated to maintaining high public health standards as they prepare for Broadway’s return.
