Yet, I believe parents should ultimately make that choice,” he remarked during a press briefing. In simpler terms, he seems to suggest that while wearing a mask is the right thing to do, he cannot enforce it due to the influence of misinformation circulating on social media.
Despite his recommendation, the situation remains precarious for Tennessee’s children, as the governor has shifted the decision-making power regarding mask-wearing to parents. When questioned about reinstating virtual learning options for schools, he stated, “We currently have no plans to do that.” As a result, many schools are forced to close or go into quarantine due to high student infection rates. Given that only 41% of Tennessee’s population is vaccinated—one of the lowest rates in the country—and with few schools implementing mask mandates, the outlook is grim.
