“I agreed to take part in a project celebrating the 25th anniversary of ‘Jagged Little Pill,’ and I was interviewed during a particularly vulnerable phase of my life, while battling my third postpartum depression during the pandemic,” Morrison said in a statement. “I was misled into thinking it would be a positive portrayal, but upon viewing the initial cut, it was clear that our visions did not align. This is not the narrative I intended to share.”
Morrison has openly discussed her challenges with postpartum depression following each of her three children. After the birth of her youngest in 2019, she revealed that it took nearly two years for her to feel like herself again. Given the added stress of the pandemic, her choice to engage in deeply personal interviews at that time seems questionable.
While Morrison did not pinpoint specific scenes or elements of the documentary, she candidly addresses her past sexual encounters with five men, beginning when she was just 15. She reflects on these experiences differently now as an adult, acknowledging the victimization she felt. “It took years in therapy to recognize that I had been victimized,” she shares in the film. “I used to insist I was consenting, but then I was reminded, ‘You were 15; you weren’t consenting.’ Now I see it clearly – they were all pedophiles. It’s statutory rape.”
Morrison is now distancing herself from the film and its director, Alison Klayman. “I sit here now experiencing the full impact of having trusted someone who did not deserve my trust,” she stated regarding Klayman.
“I have chosen not to participate in any events related to this film for two reasons: first, I am currently on tour. Second, much like other ‘stories’ and unauthorized biographies over the years, this film includes implications and inaccuracies that are simply untrue,” Morrison explained. “While there are elements of beauty and some accuracy in this/my story, I cannot support someone else’s simplistic portrayal of a narrative far too complex for them to convey.”
Klayman, for her part, expressed gratitude for Morrison’s contributions to the film’s production. “It’s incredibly challenging to see a film made about yourself,” Klayman said in an interview. “I think she’s incredibly brave, and I believe the film captures the work and nuance that went into it. She gave so much of her time and effort to this project.”
The documentary is scheduled to premiere on HBO on November 19.
