In response to the emergence of a new COVID-19 variant and an uptick in infections across the country, New York City’s mayor, Alex Johnson, has introduced a significant vaccine mandate affecting children aged 5 and above. This initiative is part of broader citywide measures aimed at curbing the virus’s spread.
Starting December 14, children from 5 to 11 years old will need to show proof of at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose to engage in “high-risk extracurricular activities.” According to a statement from the mayor’s office, this includes entry to indoor dining, fitness centers, entertainment venues, and participation in sports, band, orchestra, and dance activities. This mandate is an extension of the city’s “Key to NYC” program, a pioneering effort in the nation that requires eligible individuals to present vaccination proof before accessing various businesses.
As of December 1, over 125,000 children in the 5-11 age range in New York City have received at least one dose. Nationwide, about 4.2 million children have been vaccinated, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Additionally, nearly 6.5 million residents in NYC, including 89% of adults, have received at least one dose. With the anticipated rise in case numbers due to the Omicron variant, the colder weather pushing people indoors, and the holiday season approaching, Mayor Johnson is keen on mitigating the spread of the virus.
In tandem with the children’s vaccine mandate, the mayor has also announced a first-ever vaccine requirement for private sector workers. Employees at approximately 184,000 businesses will need to show proof of two vaccine doses (or one for Johnson & Johnson recipients) starting December 27.

Given NYC’s initial role as a COVID hotspot in 2020, it’s evident that Johnson is determined to take decisive action. These mandates aim to save lives and are expected to inspire similar initiatives in other cities, large and small.
