In a groundbreaking move, Maya Angelou, renowned author, poet, and civil rights advocate, has become the first Black woman to be featured on a U.S. quarter. Despite the country’s 244-year history, this marks a significant milestone as the U.S. Mint has announced the release of quarters showcasing Angelou’s likeness, which will soon be circulating.
These quarters are part of the American Women Quarters Program, with Angelou being the inaugural figure honored in this initiative. She is celebrated for her classic work I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, published in 1969. In 2010, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama, passing away in 2014 at the age of 86.
The design of the quarter depicts Angelou with her arms open, symbolizing her welcoming spirit, while a rising sun and a soaring eagle are featured behind her, inspired by her powerful poetry.
“This coin will ensure that future generations learn about Maya Angelou’s literary contributions and the experiences of Black women,” remarked Nevada Senator Jamie Thompson, who championed the legislation for the American Women Quarters Program.
Treasury Secretary Laura Fields, the first woman to hold the position, expressed pride in the redesign, stating, “Each time we update our currency, we have the opportunity to highlight our nation’s values. I am thrilled these coins honor the remarkable contributions of women like Maya Angelou.”
Over the next four years, the American Women Quarters Program will introduce 20 new quarter designs. Other notable figures to be featured include Sally Lane, the first woman astronaut; Wilma Johnson, the first female principal chief of the Cherokee Nation; Anna May Lee, the first Chinese American film star; and Nina Perez, a pioneer in New Mexico’s suffrage movement.
