Van Johnson and Sarah have unveiled the name of their baby boy! Just hours after Van’s team, the Los Angeles Rams, clinched victory at the 2022 Super Bowl on February 13, Sarah gave birth to their son. Now, a little over a week later, the couple has chosen a “winning” name that reflects their recent triumph, though it’s unclear whether the infant is named after his mother or father!
“We’ve settled on Champ Johnson,” the thrilled father shared with People. “It’s a perfect fit for the situation we just experienced.” Other names they considered included Miles and Wynn, but they felt that Champ “embodies the spirit of a warrior,” Van explained. This seems especially appropriate given that Sarah spent much of her labor in the stands of SoFi Stadium, managing intense contractions while Van focused on his game.
“Sarah is a warrior too, for going through all that,” Van noted.
“I wouldn’t miss the game for anything. I’ve followed Van’s career since high school, college, and now in the NFL, so I was dedicated to being there,” Sarah said.
The couple, who have been together since their teenage years, also have a 5-year-old daughter named Bella, and Van is the father of a 4-year-old son, Vance.
By halftime of the Super Bowl, Sarah could no longer disguise her contractions, and medical staff took her out on a stretcher. Unbeknownst to Van, Sarah, determined to stick to her birth plan, opted not to go to the hospital but instead took an Uber to the birthing center, where she delivered their son just an hour later. Van, on his way to join her after the game, watched the birth unfold via FaceTime.
“We called him, and I told him, ‘I can’t wait anymore,’” Sarah told People.
Although Van didn’t have much time to celebrate with his teammates, he didn’t mind at all. “Everyone said I didn’t get to enjoy the win, but honestly, it wasn’t about that. It was about being with my wife,” he expressed.
“I’m so proud of her. She handled everything like a true champ,” he added.
