A car seat is often the first purchase made to ensure your little one’s safety, making it one of the most crucial items for any new parent. While these seats can seem like a one-time investment due to their size and cost, that’s rarely the case. Using an expired car seat, one that has been involved in an accident, or one that no longer fits your child can be dangerous. Most children will need various seats and boosters as they grow.
This is where Target’s semiannual car seat trade-in event comes into play. From April 18-30, 2022, shoppers can bring any car seat, booster, or base — including those that are expired, damaged, or have been in a crash. These items will be recycled, not reused. Look for the designated drop-off box inside your local Target store. After placing your car seat inside, simply open the Target Circle app on your phone and scan the code on the outside of the drop box. This action will automatically generate a 20% discount coupon for you, valid until May 14, 2022. It’s a great opportunity to purchase a new car seat, stroller, crib, or other essential baby gear!
Remember to check the expiration date on your car seat. Different models have varying lifespans, so make sure to look for the “Don’t use after” date located on the bottom of the seat. Additionally, any car seat should be replaced after a moderate or severe crash to maintain optimal safety for your child, as recommended by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Their website provides a list of criteria for determining if a crash is minor. However, many families opt to replace a seat after any incident for peace of mind.
Also, verify that your child is still within the height and weight limits for their current seat. Car seats are only effective when used correctly, and if your child has outgrown their seat, it can increase risk during a collision.
Target’s website mentions that materials from old car seats are recycled through their partnership with Waste Management. Since 2016, they have successfully recycled 1.7 million car seats, totaling 25.4 million pounds of material. This initiative benefits both parents and the environment. Just a heads up, when you remove that old car seat, make sure you have a vacuum handy to tackle the inevitable mess of Goldfish, Triscuits, and Cheerios hiding beneath it!
