If there was ever a moment for a female late-night host, it was yesterday, the first show after the Supreme Court’s anticipated yet devastating overturn of Roe v. Wade, the critical 1973 ruling that ensured the right to abortion nationwide. The Guttmacher Institute predicts that abortion will soon be banned in 26 states across the U.S. Chelsea Handler, stepping in for Jimmy Kimmel, effectively voiced the anger many have felt since the ruling was announced on Friday. Dressed appropriately in a black pantsuit, she began her monologue by noting that Kimmel is away this week “doing whatever the heck he wants with his body.”
“At this point, I’d probably have more rights if my vagina were an AR-15,” she quipped. In response to McCarthy’s claim that if his party regains control of Congress in the upcoming elections, they will “save as many lives as possible,” Handler challenged him to clarify which lives he meant, stating, “just as long as that life doesn’t need baby formula, affordable health care, or a safe learning environment.”
Addressing McCarthy directly, Handler elaborated, “Let’s discuss what it truly means to be pro-life. Universal healthcare? That’s pro-life. Limiting gun access? Also pro-life. Tackling climate change? You guessed it, pro-life. Following medical advice during a pandemic? Definitely pro-life. And not forcing women to give birth like livestock? Absolutely pro-life. Yet your party opposes all of these initiatives.”
“Calling Republicans pro-life is akin to calling O.J. Simpson pro-wife,” Handler concluded, prompting a huge cheer from the audience. After airing a clip of Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene’s reaction to the ruling—“Praise God!”—Handler’s face perfectly conveyed the disgust, exhaustion, and disbelief that has gripped many since Friday. Handler even proposed a solution for the current situation: “Let’s utilize the ‘pull-out method’—as in pulling Clarence Thomas out of the Supreme Court.” If only we could use this ‘pull-out method’ on enough senators to ensure reproductive rights legislation passes.
