10 Insights on Raising a Large Family

My partner, David, and I never envisioned ourselves with a large family. In fact, if either of us had expressed a desire for such a family size during our early dating days, the other would likely have fled in terror. Now that we have embraced this journey, it has become a remarkable experience. We cherish the size of our family and can’t fathom having one child less.

In today’s society, large families are becoming increasingly rare, which often leads to curiosity about how we manage. Here are ten insights I’ve gleaned from raising a large family:

  1. Defining ‘Large’ is Relative.
What constitutes a “large” family varies from person to person. For some, having more than two children qualifies, while for me, with five kids at home, I consider seven or more a large family. It’s all about perspective. Just like the concept of “old,” which always seems to be at least twenty years older than you feel.
  2. Spontaneity is a Myth.
With a large family, everything requires meticulous planning. I once impulsively decided to leave for a trip a day early, thinking we were ready. It took us a staggering five hours to finally get out the door.
  3. Allow Extra Travel Time.
If the average family might take four hours for a drive, expect six to eight hours with a larger crew. Frequent stops for potty breaks, diaper changes, and feeding all add up. Plus, there’s the time spent gathering everyone back into the vehicle.
  4. Privacy is a Luxury.
The number of children in your home directly increases the likelihood of interruptions during any activity, including romantic moments with your partner. If you can manage to share a romantic moment in the time it takes to switch a laundry load, you’re ahead of the game!
  5. Laundry is an Endless Cycle.
I can confidently say I’ve yet to misplace a child in the laundry room, but the risk is always there. The sheer volume of laundry can be overwhelming.
  6. Aspirations Shift.
Once, my dreams involved exotic vacations. Now, I find myself fantasizing about high-capacity appliances, like industrial washers and dryers, a spacious kitchen, and soundproof rooms for each child.
  7. Grocery Expenses are Daunting.
With three boys at home, I often dream of living on a farm, convinced that growing our own food, including raising cattle, will be essential when they hit their teenage years.
  8. Forget About Fuel Efficiency.
Finding a vehicle that can accommodate our family size without guzzling gas is a challenge. Affordable options are rare.
  9. Early Bedtimes are Essential.
New friends are often surprised to learn that my middle children have a 7:30 PM bedtime. This routine is crucial for survival, providing the rare moments of peace that keep us sane.
  10. Embrace the Noise and Chaos.
It’s impossible to have so many people in one space without encountering noise and disorder. I’ve accepted that my home may never resemble a magazine spread, and that’s perfectly fine with me.

As for whether we will expand our family further, only time will reveal that answer. For more insights, you can explore this helpful resource on pregnancy and home insemination here.
