20 Aspirations for My Parenting Journey
As I’ve contemplated the idea of a bucket list, I started to envision my own unique set of aspirations as a parent. These aspirations go beyond the typical goals of ensuring my children grow up to be successful or learn essential life skills. Instead, they encapsulate the smaller, yet equally significant milestones I hope my children will achieve before they venture out into the world. Here’s what I’ve come up with:
- Master the art of dressing themselves without looking like they’ve just rolled out of bed.
- Remember to grab their backpack and lunch on their way out the door for school.
- Utilize their clothing for its intended purpose rather than as a napkin.
- Learn proper hygiene practices, especially when it comes to wiping after using the bathroom.
- Engage in play together without needing my constant supervision.
- Take showers and ensure that every bit of shampoo and conditioner is rinsed out of their hair.
- Return home from school with everything I packed that morning.
- Complete their homework independently, without constant nudges from me.
- Store their snow gear neatly when they come inside, rather than leaving it scattered on the floor.
- Understand the importance of lifting the toilet seat.
- Tidy up their rooms before I reach the point of implosion.
- Respond with more than just “Fine” or “It sucks” when I inquire about their day at school.
- Go to bed and actually stay in bed throughout the night.
- Brush their teeth twice daily without reminders or tantrums.
- Avoid tracking dirt through the house after using the bathroom.
- Place dirty laundry in the basket or, ideally, take it straight to the laundry room.
- Refrain from uttering the phrase “I’m bored.”
- Dispose of their tissues and socks properly instead of leaving them on the floor.
- Put their clean laundry away without being prompted and avoid cramming everything into one drawer or hiding it under the bed.
- Wash and put away the dishes; at this point, I’d even settle for them being placed in the sink. If I’m feeling particularly ambitious, maybe even loading the dishwasher.
While this list may seem like a far-fetched dream, it reflects my hopes for a smoother household dynamic. After all, if others can aspire to visit the Seven Wonders of the World, surely I can wish for my child to cap the toothpaste, right?
