The Stages of Parenting: Navigating the Challenges
As a parent of seven, it has become evident to me that the journey of raising children consists of navigating through various challenging stages. Just when you think you’ve conquered one difficult phase, another one emerges.
Phase 1 — Sleep Deprivation
For most parents, this phase typically lasts around two to three months, but for many, it can stretch to six or even seven months. If you persevere, a miraculous night will come when you go to sleep, bracing yourself for a couple of hours of rest. Eight hours later, you will wake up and realize you have finally enjoyed a full night’s sleep. Initially, panic will set in as you rush to check on your child, fearing something might be wrong. To your relief, they are perfectly fine and have slept through the night. You might think, “Finally, things will be easier!” But then, you advance to…
Phase 2 — Mobility
This phase can be even more challenging than sleep deprivation. Your child will discover every choking hazard in sight and make it their mission to sample it all. Every toilet, garbage can, and pet food dish may feel like a threat to your child’s safety. Your ability to accomplish household tasks becomes significantly hindered, and you begin to realize just how dirty your home has become, often judging the need for cleaning based on the color of grime on your child’s knees. This phase lasts about two years. However, one day, you might find that you can leave the bathroom door open without a disaster unfolding, or leave a garbage can unguarded with its contents still intact two hours later.
Phase 3 — Talking
In this stage, parents eagerly await their child’s first words, urging them to say “Mama!” What they don’t anticipate is that once the talking begins, it rarely stops. Those initial “Mamas” are endearing, but the 4,000th can become quite grating—especially if it’s accompanied by phrases like, “You’re the worst!”
Phase 4 — The Threes and Fours
Forget the so-called “terrible twos”; they are merely a warm-up. The threes and fours are where the real challenge lies. During this period, phrases like “Why?” and “Please?” will echo through your home countless times each day. This stage can be exhausting, leaving you breathless and on the brink of collapse.
Phase 5 — Lying
Believe it or not, if you think your children don’t lie, you’re likely still entrenched in this phase yourself.
Phase 6 — “But Jane’s Mom Lets Her”
This phase is self-explanatory and often comes with its own set of challenges.
Phase 7 — Teenagers
This phase can be equally unsettling as the previous one, with the added factor that your children may now be larger than you and capable of outrunning you.
Phase 8 — Money Requests
This stage seems to drag on endlessly. As a parent, you may find yourself perpetually asked for money, a situation that can continue well into adulthood.
