The Elf on the Shelf: Why It’s Not for Us
As the holiday season approaches, many parents start to prepare for the arrival of their beloved Elf on the Shelf. It’s a time when creative moms and dads showcase their imaginative elf antics on social media, aiming to bring joy to their children. This year, my 8-year-old even inquired about why we don’t participate in this festive tradition. While I can’t recall my exact response, the truth is simple: we don’t engage in Elf on the Shelf because I am, quite frankly, too lazy.
Let’s Break It Down
Committing to Elf on the Shelf means you are signing up for years of nightly creativity, coming up with new and exciting scenarios for your children leading up to Christmas. Personally, I find that one night of frantically wrapping gifts as “Santa” while trying to avoid detection is more than enough holiday hustle for me. The idea of tip-toeing around the house, arranging cheesy scenes with the elf, and then repeating it every night? I simply cannot do it.
I acknowledge the effort and joy that many of my friends pour into their elf traditions; I truly admire their creativity and see the delight it brings to their kids. However, I’ve decided not to join that particular bandwagon, and that’s perfectly fine.
The Pressure of Tradition
Moreover, I’ve noticed an increasing pressure each year as more families embrace this tradition. I often feel like a party pooper for opting out of something that seems to have become a holiday rite of passage. What if, one day, we’re faced with a new bizarre holiday trend, like a Thanksgiving Turkey on the Shelf? Will we be expected to stage that, too? I refuse to commit to such traditions when I can offer my child memorable experiences, like attending a musical or going on a Santa train ride instead.
Standing Together
To my fellow parents who also shy away from the elf tradition, let’s stand together in our shared choice. We can appreciate the creativity of our elf-enthusiast friends while enjoying the comfort of our own holiday routines. There’s camaraderie in our decision to keep things simple, and I’m here for you.

In Summary
While the Elf on the Shelf continues to gain traction among families, some of us choose to navigate the holiday season in our own way, without the added pressure of elf antics. We can create our own memorable traditions and enjoy the festive spirit without succumbing to external expectations.
