What “Normal” Really Looks Like in a Busy Household
You know how it goes: other moms often say to me, “Oh, I can’t have you over! My place is a total disaster.” But the moment I step into their home, it’s like a pristine little paradise. Before I even get a chance to say hello, they’re apologizing and insisting their home is a wreck. Seriously? It’s like they’re trying to convince me that a magazine-worthy living room is somehow messy.
Girl, please. Your house is spotless! You’ve got fresh towels laid out and toys neatly confined to a rug—not a crumb in sight! Sippy cups are where they should be, and I doubt your dog has even shed a hair. If you think this is messy, well, you might have a skewed perception of reality, or perhaps you’re just fishing for compliments. It’s totally normal to have a bit of chaos when you’ve got kids, dogs, and a life to juggle—trust me, I’ve got three little rascals under five!
So, for all those moms out there who proclaim their pristine homes are messy and those who fear hosting playdates because they think their “clean” isn’t good enough, let’s set the record straight on what “normal” really looks like in our homes.
Normal: There Is Always One Room that’s a Mess.
In my house, that’s the dining room. It’s where art supplies, sewing projects, and the remnants of my failed attempts at organization come together in a chaotic symphony. Forget about seeing that gorgeous dining set; it’s currently buried under a mountain of glitter and toys. If you’re waiting for me to tidy it up for guests, you might be waiting a while!
Normal: Laundry Is an Ever-Present Challenge.
Right now, I’ve got five clean baskets blocking the fridge, a load in the washer, and another in the dryer. No dirty clothes in sight, but those baskets are not going to fold themselves. I once heard about a friend who hid a pet snake under her laundry baskets for two weeks—now that’s a laundry ninja move!
Normal: Dishes Are Everywhere.
My sink? Overflowing. My counter? A dish mountain. I’ve been known to use a teaspoon for cereal when the clean spoons have disappeared into the abyss. It’s a daily struggle to keep up!
Normal: Bath Toys Are Left Behind.
After a bath, my kids leave their toys exactly where they dropped them. Seriously, don’t even think about shutting the shower curtain; we all know what’s lurking behind it!
Normal: Toys Are Scattered Beyond Control.
No matter how hard we try, there are always toys left lying around. I’ve discovered ball-pit balls in the strangest places, like my washing machine and even my yard. If you spot plastic army men in odd corners of your home, I’m right there with you.
Normal: Cups Are Everywhere.
How did we survive the ‘80s without a cup in hand? Now, my kids leave cups all over the house, and they’ll ask, “Is this good, Mama?” before taking a sip. It’s a never-ending cycle of cups!
Normal: Art Damage Happens.
My bathtub has seen better days, stained with tie-dye from a craft project gone wrong. I can’t remember the last time I dusted, and my walls are adorned with my kids’ “artwork” that I haven’t gotten around to cleaning up.
Normal: Your Car Is a Disaster Zone.
Fast-food wrappers, spare diapers, and dirty sippy cups? You bet! My car could definitely use a clean, but I’m just thankful it’s still rolling.
Normal: You Forget Trash Day.
So what if my garbage can is overflowing? Life happens, and I just forgot. As long as the trash is out of the house, I count that as a win!
Normal: There’s Something in Disrepair.
My master bath shower hasn’t been used in ages. A little chat with some fellow moms revealed I’m not alone in this—many of us have at least one area in our homes that’s seen better days.
So there you have it! Either your house is actually clean, or we’re all in this chaotic mess together. So, let’s stop the guilt trips and host those playdates! I promise I won’t judge if you don’t peek into my messy corners.
