“Nope, That’s Not Me!” My Life as Someone Else
You know, it’s been a good six or seven years since I first noticed this strange phenomenon of looking like someone I’m not. It’s not the first time, and I’m sure it won’t be the last. I can’t quite put my finger on whether it’s my appearance, my demeanor, or something else entirely, but it’s a curious experience that has followed me since I turned 20.
Most often, this odd sensation hits when someone approaches me, only to suddenly realize they’ve got the wrong person. But there have been some memorable moments too! One time, I was chilling in a pub near my old apartment, just waiting for a friend. Out of the blue, a woman I’d never seen before plopped down across from me and said, “Well?” I was caught off guard and replied, “Well, what?”
“Come on, what do you have to say for yourself?” she snapped. I was confused, so I replied, “I’m sorry, but I don’t think I know you.”
She chuckled, shaking her head, and said, “This is new!” After I cleared things up, we both shared a laugh. But I could tell she was seriously puzzled—it was a weird moment for sure.
Speaking of strange, there was this time I ran into a friend who used to live in my building. She greeted me like normal and asked if I made it to a meeting on Monday. I was baffled because I had no meeting that day and was just at home. She insisted I was the one she saw on Oxford Street, even claiming we chatted for five minutes! It’s wild to think someone could pass for me to the extent that my friend had a full conversation with them.
The most intense experience happened when I was working at a campus bookstore. There was this guy who would come in just to stare at me, which was a little unnerving. My coworkers joked he had a crush on me, but it felt more uncomfortable than anything. One night while I was working late, he finally approached me.
“Hey,” he said, and when I replied, he confessed, “I come in here a lot just to look at you.” My heart sank. He then shared a story about growing up in Iraq, detailing how his brother, a talented dentist, was taken away one day and never returned. He looked me straight in the eye and said, “You really look like my brother.” It was an emotional moment that left me at a loss for words. He left the store, and I never saw him again, leaving my colleague and me just standing there, in shock.
