A Lesson in Humanity at the Taco Truck
Last week, I picked up my daughters and one of their friends from school, and we made a quick stop at our go-to taco truck parked near a car wash on Westwood and Santa Monica Boulevards. As we waited in line, my daughter Lily noticed a homeless man approaching us.
He was tall with unkempt grey hair and wore an unbuttoned shirt that revealed a red, blotchy chest. His pants were rolled up at the ankles, exposing purple skin, and he was in loafers without socks. Lily, who is particularly sensitive to the unpredictability of homeless individuals in Los Angeles, immediately wanted to retreat to the car. I understood her concern but also wanted to teach my kids my grandmother’s mantra: “Be careful, but unafraid.”
However, to my surprise, the man was walking straight toward us. My heart raced as I quickly scanned him for any potential threat. There were plenty of people around, which was somewhat reassuring, but I still felt anxious. Then, I decided to take action. I stepped forward and said, “Hi there! Are you hungry? Can I buy you some lunch?”
His face lit up with relief as he replied, “Yes, please, I’m really hungry.” He confidently shared his order: a large beef burrito, two beef tacos, and a Coke. I placed the order for him along with mine and the girls’ before sending them back to the car. I noticed Lily still watching me with a hint of worry.
As we waited for the food, the atmosphere was a bit tense. Neither of us spoke; it felt like we were both adhering to an unspoken social agreement. I was hyper-aware of my surroundings while he seemed lost in thoughts I couldn’t fathom. This interaction wasn’t about forming a friendship; it was a simple exchange of needs.
When I handed him the food, he said, “Thank you very much.” “You’re welcome,” I replied, stepping back. Then, with surprising dignity, he introduced himself, “My name is Jake.” That caught me off guard. I looked into his eyes and saw a fellow human being, and it hit me hard. In that moment, I realized he was once a baby full of potential, just like us. I couldn’t help but wonder how life had taken him down such a difficult path.
I replied, “My name is Sarah.” “Thank you, Sarah. Goodbye.” With that, he walked away with purpose. I turned to find my daughters pressed against the car window, wide-eyed and absorbing everything.
This experience grounded me, reminding me of what truly matters: how we treat each other. It was a humbling moment that stripped away my ambitions and reminded me of our shared humanity. In summary, this encounter with Jake at the taco truck not only taught my daughters an important lesson about kindness and compassion but also connected me to a shared humanity that often gets lost in the bustle of daily life. It was a poignant reminder of our responsibility to treat each other with dignity, regardless of our circumstances.
