Will Smith: ‘I Discovered Early On to Face My Fears’
In a recent chat with contributor Jeanne Wolf, Will Smith, now 46, opened up about his insecurities, unyielding optimism, and a few of his quirks. Even with all the excitement and drama in his latest film, Focus, he and co-star Margot Robbie manage to weave in some romance.
“Every film is essentially a love story,” he shared. “I believe there’s no other type of movie. Even in action flicks like Bad Boys, it’s all about relationships—it’s a ‘bromance’ of sorts. We live and die together, bad boys for life!”
As someone who has navigated the twists and turns of Hollywood, he’s no stranger to the art of deception. “Come on, I’m an actor! Everyone’s got their own game going on. People will do what it takes to get what they want. Underneath it all, human interactions are like a daily con.”
After all these years in the industry, does it become easier? “Honestly, I’m usually feeling uneasy and uncertain while filming. I don’t want people to see how tough it can be. My goal is to let the audience just enjoy the final product.”
So, how does he tackle his insecurities? “I learned early on to confront fear head-on. There’s so much that scares me, and when I feel that fear, it frustrates me enough to face it. It’s a tough journey, but it’s been beneficial.”
With his son Jaden and daughter Willow stepping into acting, what wisdom does he share? “My great-grandmother used to say, ‘Experiencing things yourself is better than just borrowing others’ experiences.’ That’s how I see it. Jada and I give our kids the freedom to make their own choices, as much as they can handle.”
Any bad habits he’s looking to change? “I have that creative mindset, so I’m often losing track of my keys or wallet, and I’m not too concerned about my wardrobe. I just drop my clothes. I need some clutter to fuel my creativity!”
When it comes to handling the pressure of being in such a competitive field, he admits, “Success makes it trickier to branch out and try new things. I still have some space to grow, but the margin for error shrinks with every step.”
What keeps him moving forward? “I think I have this odd filter that blocks out negativity. I like to think of it as having rose-colored glasses. I try not to see obstacles. I connect with what Barack Obama called ‘the audacity of hope.’ Some folks might see it as foolishness, but I truly believe in the power of belief.”
