A Journey Through Motherhood: Embracing Change
I can still picture that moment vividly. I was at a lovely church, my lively little son, Ethan, was bouncing on my lap like a spring, and I was doing my best to keep him entertained during a formal wedding. Then, the woman next to me mentioned that her son would be starting kindergarten soon, and I felt a twinge of envy.
I know it sounds awful. Ethan was just a baby, but oh, those days felt endless! He was still too young for all the fun activities I had been dreaming about as a mom—like art projects, trips to the park, and baseball games. I was grappling with my newfound reality, missing the days when I didn’t have to put someone else’s needs above my own, and sometimes, I felt a hint of resentment.
When that mom said her son would be off to school in the fall, I did some quick mental math and realized it would be four long years before Ethan joined him. It felt like an eternity—another lifetime entirely.
Fast forward to today, and here I am, having navigated those four years with a little one at my side nearly every day. It’s been both better and harder than I ever imagined. Now, as kindergarten approaches in just a few months, I find myself torn between excitement and sadness. It feels like the end of one chapter and the start of another.
While I can nod along with other parents who get emotional about their kids starting school, I don’t entirely share their sentiments. Sure, life is about to change, and I’ll definitely miss Ethan’s sweet face during those long school hours, especially during our quiet moments together. But there’s also this growing pride within me. Look how far we’ve come! I think as I admire his long arms and bright smile.
