The Day My Daughter’s Lovey Went Missing
When I stumbled upon a heartwarming tale about a 6-year-old boy who lost his cherished stuffed tiger, Hobbes, during a family trip, I instantly thought of my daughter, Lily, and her deep bond with her favorite plush, Snuggles Bear.
Snuggles Bear isn’t your typical teddy bear or blanket. It’s a worn, off-white square of soft fabric, with a bear’s head sewn onto one corner. Some might call these comfort objects “lovies,” but to Lily, it’s simply Snuggles Bear, a name she proudly gave it as soon as she could talk. Since birth, she’s been inseparable from Snuggles, and now at nearly 8 years old, their nightly ritual continues.
I’ll admit, I sometimes lose my patience with Snuggles Bear. It has a knack for disappearing just when it’s most needed. I can’t count how many times we’ve faced a mini-crisis right before bedtime, with Lily in tears and her nose streaming.
“Is she under the couch?” I shout, rallying the household like a drill sergeant. “Search everywhere! Is she hiding in the attic? On a random bookshelf? Or behind the TV? Has anyone checked the pantry?” Seriously, where could Snuggles Bear be???
Whenever new babysitters come over, I make sure to emphasize how vital this scruffy piece of fabric is to our peace of mind. Losing Snuggles is not an option!
As Lily has grown, she’s started to realize how “childish” it seems to hold onto Snuggles in front of her friends. So, reluctantly, she now leaves her beloved bear on her pillow during playdates, which has significantly reduced our frantic searches. However, Snuggles Bear is a bit of a rebel; we often find her lounging on the window seat or sprawled out on the floor.
But just before these new rules took effect, Snuggles managed one last great escape during a family trip. We were living in San Diego at the time and decided to drive to San Francisco for a spring getaway. We checked into the stunning Fairmont Hotel on Nob Hill, ready for a few days of adventure.
On our first morning, we woke up excited, with the bed still unmade. Snuggles Bear, who had insisted on joining us, was nestled somewhere in the rumpled sheets or maybe the wet towels. When we returned later that afternoon, the room was spotless, but Snuggles was missing.
We searched every corner, and panic set in as Lily began to hyperventilate. I called the concierge, who directed me to the laundry. The odds didn’t look good. “We send out thousands of pounds of linens weekly. If Snuggles got swept up, finding her is a long shot.”
Lily was heartbroken but bravely tried to enjoy our trip, even as she quietly cried into her empty pillow at night. After a few days, we sadly drove home without Snuggles.
A week later, our phone rang. “Great news!” the concierge exclaimed, excitement in their voice. “The staff felt awful about taking Snuggles Bear. They searched and just found her! She was indeed with all the linens!”
I was amazed at the dedication of the hotel staff. Snuggles had blended in with the bedding, and they’d worked hard to locate her. The concierge continued, “We’re sending Snuggles Bear on a little adventure today! She’ll be flying FedEx and will arrive at your home tomorrow. She’s had quite the scare but will be back soon!”
When Lily heard this, it was as if the holidays had come early; she danced with joy. The next day, we opened the package to find Snuggles smiling back at us. Tears of happiness flowed as Lily embraced her long-lost friend.
Of course, a few hours later, as bedtime approached, I heard that familiar cry from upstairs: “Snuggles? Snuggles? Where did my Snuggles Bear go?”
In the end, it’s just a reminder of how important these little comforts are in our lives.
