9 Reasons I’m Not Ready for the Back-to-School Rush
It feels like everywhere I turn, I see parents bursting with excitement about sending their kids back to school. Am I the only one who’s not feeling the same thrill? Sure, I’m a work-from-home mom, and I get the joy of a few hours of peace and quiet, but honestly, here’s why I’m not at all ready for this transition.
- Mornings Aren’t My Thing. I’ve finally gotten used to my late-night work schedule, where I’m up until 1 a.m. and sleep until 9 a.m. My kids have become pros at getting their own breakfast and letting me snooze. Now I have to drag myself out of bed at the crack of dawn? Ugh, this is gonna be rough.
- Getting My Son Ready is a Challenge. Getting my sleepy son out of bed is like trying to herd cats. After wrestling him from his mattress, he sits there like a zombie, and I’m left shoving oatmeal in his mouth to avoid a mid-morning meltdown. And then there’s my daughter, all dressed and ready, acting like she’s the responsible one—so annoying!
- Lunch Prep Before Coffee. I mean, I could make their lunches the night before, but let’s be real—I’m not that organized. School cafeteria food? That’s a whole other nightmare. So, here I am, scrambling in the morning before I’ve even had my caffeine fix.
- Grooming Pressure. Over the summer, who cares if the kids’ hair is a bit messy or if they skip a bath? But once school starts, I feel the eyes of judgment everywhere. The pressure to keep up with hygiene is real, and it stresses me out just thinking about it.
- Closed-Toed Shoes are Torture. After a summer of flip-flops and Crocs, regular shoes suddenly feel like medieval torture devices. My kids are back to complaining about pinching and scratchy socks. “Mom, my shoes aren’t on the right feet!”—they are, trust me!
- Crazy Schedules. The mere thought of organizing all the meetings, appointments, and activities for the school year makes me want to crawl into bed. Summer is blissfully laid-back, but the school year is jam-packed with obligations. I might need a little help to survive this.
- Homework. Wait, you just spent six hours at school, and you still have homework? I thought I graduated from homework hell! Now I’m stuck juggling laundry and dinner while helping with assignments. Seriously?
- Early Bedtimes. Gone are the days of bribing my kids to stay up late with back rubs. They need their sleep, and it’s up to me to enforce bedtime. Those late-night snuggles are going to be missed.
- Fundraisers. Here’s a hundred bucks, school—let’s skip the guilt trip, okay?
And, if I’m being honest, I’m going to miss my kids when they’re gone all day. There, I said it! Even though I complain about the chaos, I do enjoy having them around during the summer—especially since I can sleep in a bit longer.
