A 12-Year Adventure: A Birthday Letter to My Son
Dear Lucas,
Twelve years ago tonight, I was deep in labor, feeling the waves of discomfort crash over me. Alone in our cozy little apartment, I fought through each contraction until I finally called your dad to rush me to the hospital. Just a little while later, our lives were forever changed.
With your arrival, our family began to take shape. You’ve been my partner from the very start, the one who has been with me through every twist and turn of our journey. We began as just a mother and her son, but our family blossomed into something beautiful.
From the moment you made me a mom, you’ve been there for it all. We welcomed a wonderful stepdad into our lives when you were just one, celebrated the birth of your little sister when you were three, and faced the heartbreak of losing that first family when you were five. Yet, we found healing in our quiet home, and our family learned to grow again, welcoming a new stepdad when you were seven and another sister when you turned eleven. Now, we’re a family of five, and I cherish every moment we share.
Reflecting on our path, I know it hasn’t always been easy. If I had the power to choose a smoother road for you, I would take it in a heartbeat. I would have paved a path filled with light, joy, and laughter. I would have sent you off with a shield and armor to protect you from life’s trials, imparting all the wisdom necessary for your journey ahead. I would have prayed for your every step.
But here we are, after twelve long years, and I see things differently. Our journey has been a blend of rough patches and beautiful moments, and through it all, we’ve walked this road together. We weren’t prepared for what lay ahead, and we’ve both felt the weight of every challenge. You’ve absorbed lessons right alongside me, observing all the changes in our family.
As you turn twelve tomorrow, I know you’re growing stronger with each passing day. You’ve picked up your own shield, ready to face the future, and I see the wisdom you’ve gained along the way. The road ahead is bright, filled with hope and opportunities.
Thank you for being my son, for helping shape our family, and for trekking this journey with us. I’m truly in awe of the life we’re building together.
Love always,
Mom (and Your Family)
