A Mom’s Life Without Coffee
For those who claim coffee doesn’t work wonders, I simply cannot relate. Take a peek beneath the surface, and I’m certain our insides would tell a different story. Coffee beans are my ignition—my fuel. They’re the oil that keeps my engine running, the charcoal that fires up my grill. You catch my drift—I need coffee.
Without my morning brew, I feel like only half the person I could be. It’s a disaster when I’m not firing on all cylinders—like the time I strolled into a store, needing just one item, and ended up wandering aimlessly for twenty minutes, completely blanking on what that item was.
A day without coffee tells my brain it’s acceptable to drive the kids to school in my slippers. It convinces me that my partner’s V-neck sweater, which resembles pajamas, is perfectly suitable for the school book fair.
Oh, yes, life without coffee is a slippery slope.
No coffee leads me to believe that a twisty tie in my hair is an acceptable hairstyle. It makes me crank up the radio when I’m just trying to heat the car. Without it, my 11-year-old’s winter boots look like the perfect footwear for me. And suddenly, the mailbox with that morning newspaper seems impossibly far away.
On a caffeine-free day, packing five Fruit Roll-Ups for the kids’ lunches? Sure, why not! (I bet that was a delightful surprise for them.) And emptying the dishwasher feels like I’m single-handedly lifting stone blocks to build a pyramid. No coffee, and I’d rather waddle around with my pants half pulled up than trek all the way upstairs for my belt.
Coffee is magical—it connects the dots in my brain and makes arguing with the morning talk radio a sport I enjoy. It transforms me into a fitness champion, allowing me to tackle an hour-long treadmill walk on a steep incline. Crank the radio to ear-splitting levels, and I’m never bored.
One of the first chores I assigned my kids was measuring out two generous scoops of Folger’s grounds. I prep the water, and all they need to do is hit the button to start the glorious gurgling. Our family has grown accustomed to the comforting sounds of our coffee maker in the morning. To my kids, the bubbling of coffee is a reassuring promise that lunch won’t consist solely of six packs of Pringles.
