Why I Travel With My Kids, Despite the Stress and Exhaustion
Every time we embark on a journey with our six little adventurers, I get hit with a wave of panic: What have we signed up for? What were we thinking? Why did we choose to visit the beach, the zoo, Grandma’s house, or Disneyland? Each time, I swear it’ll be the last. Yet, here we are, packing our bags once more.
I travel because there’s nothing quite like witnessing my toddlers experience the ocean for the first time. Initially, they scream and resist the wet sand underfoot, but soon they’re giggling as they stand at the water’s edge, feeling the sand rush back into the sea. Those moments, whether at the beach or in the mountains, remind me of the world’s wonders as I see it anew through their eyes.
I also travel because the sound of their laughter while playing with cousins is utterly contagious. Family trips are common for us, and the kids easily lose themselves in creative plays and dance routines. The joy radiating from the other room brings a smile to my face, reminding me that family time is irreplaceable, especially when I can catch up with my siblings while they entertain each other.
Traveling offers my kids invaluable lessons about the world. They’ve splashed in the Atlantic during our visits to family in New England and learned to recognize coins while buying souvenirs at the zoo. These experiences turn learning into an adventure, teaching them that diversity is a beautiful aspect of our world.
Traveling also takes me back to a time when trips were simple and carefree. Before kids, I could toss a few clothes in a carry-on and dash out the door without a care. Now, with my six little ones in tow, I’m hauling bags filled with snacks, toys, and sippy cups. Yet, glimpses of my carefree traveler self still shine through during our trips, reminding me that I’m still me, just with a bit more luggage.
I love revisiting my favorite childhood spots through my kids’ eyes. Walking down Main Street at Disneyland brings back the magic I once felt, and it’s incredible to share those same experiences with my children as they discover them for the first time.
Taking a break from the daily grind—mommy duties like laundry and dishes—feels liberating. Traveling allows me to escape the monotony and enjoy quality family time without distractions.
My kids remember the fun we created together, often forgetting the stress involved. They’ll reminisce about ice cream dinners at the beach, surprise trips to Disneyland, or egg-dyeing adventures at Grandma’s house. I might forget the details, but their memories shine bright.
Ultimately, despite the challenges, every trip is worth it. I always have that moment of doubt, but by the end, I’m convinced it was all worth it—the packing, the laundry, the sleepless nights, and the long drives. And then I turn to my partner and ask, “So, where to next?”
