Embracing My Body Beyond the Scale

Every morning, I find myself stepping onto the scale, and honestly, I can’t pinpoint why I do it. I gauge my worth and progress based on those digits, which I know isn’t the healthiest mindset. Since becoming a parent, my thoughts about my body have taken a wild ride, and let’s be real – not all of them are flattering.
I should really start doing pushups or maybe some sit-ups.
I shouldn’t have devoured that leftover grilled cheese or every last french fry.
Why did I have that second (or third) glass of wine?
Tomorrow, I’ll dive into a green smoothie regimen.
Wait, does that mean I’ll be stuck with green smoothies forever?
In the whirlwind of these thoughts, I often ignore the remarkable things my body accomplishes daily. It’s time to shift the focus from those pesky numbers to the extraordinary feats my body performs. Thankfully, my mind is starting to push back against those negative narratives, and I’m reprogramming the way I talk to myself about my body.
I know I’m not alone in this struggle, so let’s remind one another that our bodies are strong, capable, and deserving of respect—far more than the numbers on that scale. Here’s why:
- Our bodies can create life.
- A simple kiss can heal.
- We can tame wild hair and wrangle fidgety toddlers.
- Our hands are busy wiping everything from counters to tears (seriously, why do we wipe so much?).
- We lift pots and pans, then dutifully scrape leftovers into the trash.
- We lug vacuums, scrub floors, and tackle the mystery of dried toothpaste on the toilet (no idea how that gets there).
- We splash in the tub, sing songs, and fish out unexpected surprises.
- Our arms wrap around our kids for cuddles, even when we feel like we’re running on empty.
- We navigate the nightly chaos, soothing sick little ones, and keeping the peace.
- Our ears pick up on everything—their heartbeats, their secrets, and our own doubts.
- Our bodies do everything from the miraculous to the mundane.
I’m making a pledge to treat my body like I would a dear friend—celebrating its quirks and acknowledging its strengths instead of reducing it to mere numbers and imagined flaws. Let’s hold each other accountable in this journey of self-love.
If you’re in, I’m in too. Together, let’s embrace this!
