What Could Our Planet Become If We Fail to Protect It? These Dystopian Travel Posters Offer a Glimpse
Have you ever pondered the fate of our planet if we neglect to care for it? Could we find ourselves sipping cocktails on the shores of a transformed Nevada? Or might the Statue of Liberty merely be a torch emerging from the depths of a rising ocean? Imagine planning a scuba diving adventure in Washington, D.C. with friends.
While the thought is unsettling, sometimes humor is our best coping mechanism—or we might just feel overwhelmed by the grim reality of our increasingly polluted rivers. Currently, environmental regulations are being rolled back, and we face a government intent on slashing the EPA’s budget significantly.
A creative agency in Boulder, Colorado, has produced a series of posters that portray a dystopian vision of travel destinations if we continue to disregard climate change. These darkly humorous illustrations provoke a mix of laughter and concern, capturing the absurdity of our situation. They were recently re-released in anticipation of the March for Science, and you can download these thought-provoking posters for free.
We spoke with Mia Thompson, co-founder of the agency, who is also a dedicated mother of two young daughters. She explained the impetus behind the project: “As a mom, it’s crucial for me to show my girls that women can lead the charge in environmental advocacy. Like many working parents, I sometimes struggle with guilt about my job, so I strive to invest my time in causes that truly matter.”
But are these posters merely an exaggerated portrayal of potential outcomes? The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provides alarming statistics regarding the consequences of unchecked greenhouse gas emissions. The Earth’s temperature has already risen by 1.5°F over the last century, and projections suggest an increase of another 0.5°F to 8.6°F in the next hundred years. Without significant changes, temperatures in the U.S. could rise by 3°F to 12°F, leading to a projected 15% reduction in Arctic sea ice for every additional 2°F of warming. Furthermore, sea levels could rise by 1 to 4 feet, painting a dire picture of the future.
Now is not the time to reduce environmental protections or withdraw from international agreements like the Paris Accord, which aims to combat climate change. It’s essential we take global warming seriously and make personal efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions. If we don’t, the posters from the Boulder agency could become a chilling glimpse into our dystopian future.
Join the March for Science this Saturday, a movement dedicated to supporting scientific research. This planet is our only home; let’s commit to preserving it for future generations. As the March for Science reminds us, “There is no Planet B.”
In summary, the creative vision presented in these dystopian travel posters serves as a wake-up call about the consequences of ignoring environmental issues. Through humor and stark imagery, they challenge us to reflect on our responsibility to protect the Earth for ourselves and future generations.
