This Clothing Store’s Sign Will Make You Cringe Like It’s the 1950s

Since when do women need permission for anything?

Have you ever read something and thought, “There’s no way I read that correctly,” only to realize that you absolutely did and find yourself questioning how we arrived at this point as a society? That was my reaction recently while strolling past a boutique in my hometown in Minnesota. The women-owned shop, Giggle Gals, caters to suburban moms, offering clothing, jewelry, and home décor. In their window, a sign in bold letters boldly declares: “Your husband called, he said buy what you want.”

Excuse me, what?

Is this sign suggesting that I need to consult my husband before treating myself to something? Should I put aside his dinner and neatly stack his laundry before checking whether I can purchase this bath bomb? Did we just take a time machine back to the 1950s without my consent?

I really tried to see the humor in what the shop owner might have intended with that sign. However, it’s simply not funny.

The message implies that women can’t make financial decisions without their husband’s approval. Last I checked, women are capable, hardworking, multi-tasking powerhouses. More women than ever are the primary earners in their families, juggling work, meals, doctor’s appointments, and after-school activities. They run marathons, contribute to charities, and handle school fundraisers. Many work full-time, whether in or out of the home, and still find time to serve on boards, coach their kids’ sports teams, and actively support other dedicated women.

If they choose to shop at your store, they definitely don’t need anyone’s permission.

Women now earn the majority of college degrees in the U.S. across all levels—associates, bachelors, masters, and doctoral. We represent nearly half of the U.S. workforce and, according to the Department of Labor, run close to ten million businesses (including yours). About 70% of mothers with children under 18—the very customers you aim to attract—are part of the labor market, with more than 75% working full-time. This leads to stronger families and a healthier economy for everyone.

That sign is offensive to women everywhere; assuming we need our husbands’ approval for personal purchases sets us back decades, and that’s not just about women.

Sure, couples often make large financial decisions together, but the idea that we need to seek permission for a self-indulgent buy is absurd. We are independent women with minds, wallets, and considerable purchasing power.

We can handle this. No permission required.
