A Case of the Man Cold

For several weeks now, I’ve been battling an illness. My throat is sore, my nose is congested, my sinuses are in agony, and I’ve been constantly coughing up green goo (sorry for the visual). With my son struggling with an ear infection and strep throat, it’s no wonder I caught something. Last week, I finally started antibiotics for a sinus infection and was gradually starting to feel better. Just in time for my husband to fall ill.

Now, let me be clear—I adore my husband. I truly believe he’s my soulmate, and my life wouldn’t be the same without him. However, when he’s under the weather? I can’t help but fantasize about escaping with our kids, leaving him to his own devices.

You’d think he was on his deathbed yesterday. In fifty years, when he’s reflecting on his life (if all goes well), I imagine he’ll look back and recall the weekend he spent in dramatic agony. “I’m sick,” he lamented, barely able to drag himself out of bed. He made a trip to the Minute Clinic for antibiotics and a heaping dose of sympathy. An hour later, he called, sounding utterly defeated. “Did they give you something?” I inquired. “No,” he replied, whining. “The strep test was negative, and she said it can’t be a sinus infection since it just started.”

“It’s just a cold,” I replied. “A man-cold!”

Someone, please save me. I’m starting to wonder if we’ll both make it through this week—let alone the next!
