It’s Time for a Swimsuit Makeover for Women

Dear Swimwear Designers,

As I slip into swimsuits that are marketed specifically for women, I can’t help but feel like there’s a crucial aspect of our bodies that has been overlooked. That aspect? My vagina.

Now, when I mention “vagina,” I’m primarily referring to the unique hair that grows in that area: pubic hair. Unlike the gentle fuzz on our arms or the coarser strands on our legs, pubic hair is full of life and character. It doesn’t conform to anyone’s expectations and certainly doesn’t shy away from making a statement.

Can you truly be unaware of this? Unless you’re a tiny child blissfully untouched by puberty, you must know about pubes. Yet, most swimsuits, with their daringly high cuts, seem to present women with an impossible dilemma: either hide the pubes or let them fly free for everyone to see.

I’ve tried both options, and neither feels right. What I’m looking for is something new.

And please, don’t suggest a swimsuit with a skirt — that’s just insulting. I used to be a competitive swimmer, slicing through the water with speed and grace. I can’t bear the thought of a swim “skirt” interfering with my enjoyment of the water.

Let’s consider self-respect here. Even if my two children decided to take their sweet time entering the world, resulting in some post-pregnancy challenges (which I won’t go into), I still have my dignity. I love swimming, diving into deeper waters, and feeling the refreshing embrace of the waves. I don’t need a swim skirt getting tangled up in my adventures.

And let’s not pretend calling it a “sarong” makes it any better!

As I embrace my age, I find myself relating to pubic hair in a new way — I’m done pretending to be hairless. Shaving and waxing are not only painful but also feel like an unnecessary expense. Yet when I finally choose a swimsuit, and my pubes make an appearance, I find myself avoiding eye contact with others.

It’s not entirely about shame (okay, maybe a little). It’s the reality of everyone’s gaze landing on my nether region. Some might think I should cover up, while others might be in disbelief or even amused. The stares can be overwhelming, leaving me to wonder what they’re thinking.

So, all I ask is for a swimsuit that respects my needs without succumbing to outdated designs. A little more coverage in the V-zone would go a long way in allowing me to swim freely without the anxiety of razor burn or public embarrassment. Don’t men get to enjoy that freedom? Wait, I wasn’t going to go there…oops!

If you’re indifferent to what women desire, consider the financial side. Your potential market includes a vast number of adult women who are not ready to give up on stylish, functional swimsuits. Trust me, that’s a lot of customers!

Sincerely,
A Swimmer Seeking Better Coverage

Summary

Women’s swimsuits need a serious redesign to accommodate the realities of female bodies, particularly around pubic hair. With a call for more coverage that respects dignity and allows for swimming without discomfort, the need for innovation in swimsuit design is clear.
