The Parenting Unity Agreement

Dear fellow parents with whom I regularly interact,

I’ve come to realize that our parenting journey becomes significantly smoother when we collaborate and present a united front, especially in the presence of our little ones. While it’s important for our kids to understand that families have different approaches, parenting is already a challenge. So why not make things easier when we’re together?

Thus, I declare that it’s essential for us to unite in support of one another for the sake of our sanity and well-being.

In light of this, I, your fellow parent navigating this wild adventure, promise to uphold the following commitments:

  1. When we gather at a social event with our children, I will check in with you about our departure time and ensure we leave together—this way, we can avoid the inevitable chorus of “Why are we the first to leave?”
  2. If we’re dining out, I’ll consult with you beforehand on whether the kids will have soda or water, so we can dodge the dreaded Soda Showdown.
  3. Should I have treats like candy or ice cream on hand, I’ll first check with you to make sure it’s alright to indulge your child. I’d appreciate you doing the same for me!
  4. When dessert is on the table and the kids come asking for seconds, we’ll exchange knowing glances. One look will signal “no more,” and the other will say “why not, they’re already hyped up.” Once we’ve silently agreed, we’ll present our answer as a team.
  5. I promise never to give in to my child’s tantrums in front of yours, as I know it could spark similar behavior. I trust you to follow suit.
  6. We agree that sleepover requests from our kids need a minimum of 24 hours notice for consideration, and we’ll only approve them after a discussion in private.
  7. When you’re not around, I will kindly remind your children about using their manners and keeping things tidy, and I hope you’ll do the same for mine.
  8. If your child is misbehaving in your absence, I will let you know. Please feel free to do the same about my kids!
  9. If any of us forget to adhere to these agreements, I will not judge or blame, because parenting is tough—let’s keep it real.

In closing, I am committed to making our time together as families enjoyable and hope you’ll reciprocate. We must support one another through the years of parenting ahead. Let’s help each other out, alright?

Warm regards,
Your Fellow Exhausted Parent
