Volunteers Craft Adorable Halloween Costumes for NICU Infantsself insemination kit

In a heartwarming initiative, volunteers from The March of Dimes have created charming Halloween costumes for babies in the NICU at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City. While having a baby in the NICU can be an incredibly daunting experience, this thoughtful gesture brings a sprinkle of joy during a challenging time.

Everyone loves Halloween—yes, even tiny infants who may not yet know the thrill of the holiday! Thanks to the efforts of the March of Dimes and the NICU nurses at St. Luke’s Hospital, these little ones are getting to partake in the festivities, dressed in the cutest costumes imaginable.

The collaboration provided 35 NICU babies with handmade Halloween outfits, whimsical “Trick or Treat, smell my feet” cards featuring their tiny footprints, hand-crocheted pumpkins filled with treats, and delightful Halloween-themed books for families to enjoy together. The costumes, crafted with love and care, included superhero capes, butterfly wings, and even a Kansas City Royals jersey, showcasing the local spirit.

Jennifer Thompson, Communications Director for The March of Dimes, shared with us, “Families often spend weeks or months in the NICU, and it can be emotionally taxing. By enabling them to celebrate Halloween, we help restore a sense of normalcy and allow them to commemorate their baby’s first milestones, which is so important for every family.”

While the babies may not have picked their outfits, it’s hard to imagine them not feeling the warmth and love that went into each creation. I mean, how adorable is that? These little superheroes and princesses definitely light up the NICU!

Reflecting on my own experience when my daughter was born last year, even a short NICU stay can feel overwhelming. Fortunately, the dedicated individuals at The March of Dimes and St. Luke’s provided comfort and a touch of joy during that phase. Celebrating holidays like Halloween can help families create cherished memories amidst the stress.

As we admire these babies in their charming costumes, it’s clear who the real heroes are—the compassionate volunteers who made this possible.
