After escaping an abusive marriage, a brave mother turned to building a safe haven for her children. You might relate to the Pinterest-inspired baking projects that never quite turn out as expected—like those supposed-to-be adorable penguin cupcakes that resemble a distressed orca instead. Now, brace yourself for the incredible story of Mia Harris, who built a five-bedroom home from the ground up, all guided by YouTube tutorials (shakes head at my own half-finished middle school sewing project).
Mia and her children, Alex, Bella, Chloe, and Ethan, created their dream residence in Little Rock, Arkansas, as a way to break free from a violent relationship. “My kids and I needed something better,” she shared with Buzzfeed. “I was ashamed and worried about their self-esteem and confidence.”
Determined to transform their lives, Mia took action. In 2007, while driving past a tornado-damaged house with only the foundation remaining, she got inspired. With a bank loan of $150,000 for materials, Mia, who worked as a software analyst and author with no prior construction experience, turned to YouTube and her local hardware store for guidance on everything from concrete flooring and framing to cabinet making and plumbing.
“Building our own house wasn’t something we could share openly at the time. We kept it largely to ourselves, even from my coworkers and the kids’ friends. The stigma surrounding domestic violence is heavy. But gradually, we discovered our strength and deepened our family bonds,” Mia reflected on her website.
Now completed, the stunning Inkwell Manor—named for Mia’s aspiration to write there—has been home to her family for over eight years. Reflecting on how this journey has impacted her children, Mia told Buzzfeed, “They’re now fearless. They tackle any challenge head-on. There’s nothing they wouldn’t try. It’s truly remarkable.” With Mia as their role model, they’ve learned what true strength and resilience look like.
Mia has also realized her dream of becoming an author. Her upcoming book, Rise, releases on January 24 and delves into the family’s hardships and the determination needed to emerge stronger from adversity. Mia lives by the mantra: “Set an impossible goal and with enough determination, you can achieve it.”
