“It’s what you do in spite of those limitations that defines you.”

The inspiration for this incredible journey began with a television program. “I was watching a travel show about Europe,” shared Marcus Reed during an interview. “The episode focused on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage across northern Spain. I felt an immediate calling, like my heart was saying, ‘You have to do this.’”

But the roots of this adventure go deeper. Marcus and his lifelong best friend, Eric Johnson, were born within a day of each other and have remained inseparable throughout their lives. Even when Marcus began experiencing unexplained muscle weakness at 16, their bond stayed strong. When he was diagnosed with Multifocal Acquired Motor Axonopathy, a degenerative condition akin to ALS, their friendship endured. Despite losing muscle control and eventually needing a wheelchair, their connection remained steadfast.

“His strength and dignity in facing his challenges inspired me,” Eric said. “However, when the disease affected his hands, it was tough for me to accept.”

By the time Marcus watched that travel show, he was already relying on a wheelchair. He recognized his desire for adventure and knew who would stand by him.

“This friendship is a blessing. We’ve shared so many experiences together,” Eric reflected. “Why not embark on one more adventure? Let’s make it a memorable one. So, my response was immediate—I’ll push you.”

Two years after that fateful moment, Marcus and Eric set out on their journey, navigating the rugged terrain of Spain in a specially designed three-wheeled wheelchair. They traversed mountains, rivers, and vast deserts, encountering fellow hikers from 27 nations who eagerly assisted in pushing and pulling Marcus’s wheelchair over challenging landscapes.

“The kindness we received was overwhelming,” Marcus noted. “It truly restored my faith in humanity.”

After 34 days, they completed the grueling 500-mile trek. Now, Marcus and Eric are sharing their story through a documentary titled “I’ll Support You,” aimed at conveying the profound love and support they experienced along the way.

“The people who helped us climb those mountains gave so much,” Eric said. “It serves as a reminder of how we should live and treat others. We should love everyone we encounter, regardless of their journey.”

Marcus added, “Your limitations don’t define you. It’s your actions, despite those challenges, that shape who you are.”
