Warped Tour to Conclude After 24 Years: A Nostalgic Farewell
Do you recall your first experience at Warped Tour? I certainly do. My friend Alex and I convinced our pal Sarah to drive us by offering her a ticket in return. She arrived at my home with a lanky guy who had bleached hair tips, baggy jeans, and a tank top. Although he was probably around 18, I was just 15 at the time and assumed he was at least in his thirties due to his car’s well-maintained condition. He sped us from Provo to the Salt Lake City fairgrounds like a bat out of hell, completing the hour-long journey in just 30 minutes.
It was July in the scorching heat, and the mosh pits felt like a sauna. During the Deftones’ performance, I got punched in the face, and our driver left the venue with his clothes torn as if a wild animal had attacked him. Can you believe that was 20 years ago?
We were the epitome of cool back in 1998, right? Now, we’re edging closer to those annual doctor visits that include discussions about colonoscopies. How did time fly so quickly?
Warped Tour, for many of us, was a pivotal part of our lives. I attended every year from 1998 to 2004, the year I got married. I witnessed performers like Blink-182, Eminem, The Black Eyed Peas, and Katy Perry before they skyrocketed to fame. I also enjoyed acts such as Pennywise, Social Distortion, NOFX, Bad Religion, Dropkick Murphys, and The Offspring, whose music was the soundtrack to my teenage years.
I know I’m not alone in this sentiment. There’s a reason why Warped Tour holds the title for the longest-running touring music festival in North America. If you’re reading this, I bet you’re like me, reminiscing about those sweaty mosh pits and painful sunburns.
Unfortunately, all good things must end. After 24 years on the road, Kevin Lyman, the founder of the festival, has announced its conclusion. He shared this news on the Warped Tour page: “I have been incredibly fortunate to travel across the country and even around the world as one of the founders and producers of the Vans Warped Tour. Today, with a heavy heart, I announce that next year will mark the final full cross-country run of the Vans Warped Tour.”
During an interview with Billboard, he cited several reasons for this decision, including a shifting summer festival landscape, a dwindling number of bands, and declining ticket sales among the teenage demographic. In short, Warped Tour simply isn’t as culturally relevant as it once was. This news is disheartening for many, myself included. My children will never experience the thrill of mapping out their favorite bands on a multi-stage lineup, or the chaos of crowd surfing only to have their shoe stolen, forcing them to do something desperate to avoid being shoeless. They won’t know the joy of discovering a new band on a small stage, only to watch them achieve significant success later.
While the lineup for 2018 hasn’t been revealed yet, rumors suggest possible appearances by bands like My Chemical Romance and Blink-182. For those feeling nostalgic, final tour packages are available, including collectible Warped Tour Vans (although if you plan to crowd surf, I recommend not wearing them, as evidenced by my previous experience).
Good news for parents: if you accompany your child, you can enter the Warped Tour for free! That’s right, one ticket for a child equals free admission for one parent. My kids are still quite young, so I’m unsure if I can get them excited about the noise and heat, but if you have a tween or teen who doesn’t find you totally embarrassing, now is your chance to revisit your youth. The final tour is likely to feature a mix of nostalgic bands alongside fresh faces that your children will enjoy.
As we bid farewell to this iconic festival, let’s share our memories. Below is a photo of me as a teenager, circa 1999, heading home from a Warped Tour. Wasn’t my grunge-style hair something else?
Thank you, Warped Tour, for the unforgettable memories.

Summary: After 24 years of providing unforgettable experiences to music lovers, Warped Tour will conclude its journey. Founder Kevin Lyman announced the decision due to changing industry dynamics and declining relevance among youth. As we prepare for the final tour, nostalgia fills the air, reminding us of the memorable moments spent at this iconic festival.
