Get ready, fans of the beloved classic! In an exciting turn of events, a musical adaptation of The Princess Bride is in the works, and it’s bound to make every admirer of the film jump for joy. According to reports, Disney Theatrical Productions is set to breathe new life into this iconic tale, just like the Dread Pirate Roberts, with hopes of a stage debut sometime this year.

For over a decade, whispers of a stage version of The Princess Bride have circulated, but previous efforts have failed to materialize—until now. Town and Country Magazine has the scoop that the legendary William Goldman, who penned both the original novel and the 1987 film, had attempted to create a musical version back in 2007, which ultimately fell apart. While it remains to be seen whether this new rendition will take the form of a musical or a play, the anticipation is palpable, and it’s hard to imagine it won’t happen in some capacity.

In 2013, Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “My connection to The Princess Bride goes back to 1987, and it has always held a special place in my heart.” He added that collaborating on a stage production is “honestly a dream come true.”

If you haven’t experienced The Princess Bride, what are you waiting for? This film masterfully blends fairytale romance, thrilling adventure, comedic moments, and yes, even Rodents of Unusual Size. It features memorable villains, a charming priest with a speech flaw, and the incomparable Andre the Giant—what more could one ask for?

The film’s cult status is such that it even came up on my first date with my now-husband. I managed to slip in “no more rhymes, I mean it…” to gauge his response, hoping he was the one. Unfortunately, he had never seen the movie, which was shocking. After a brief moment of disbelief, I continued dating him just to witness his first viewing. Now, it’s one of his favorites—because he knows what’s good!

For this new stage adaptation, Disney has enlisted accomplished Broadway talents to craft this cherished love story. David Yazbek will compose the score, while Bob Martin and Rick Elice, both known for their work on Jersey Boys, will handle the book. We can only hope that their efforts capture the essence of the original.

Of course, if the production doesn’t include some of the classic cast members (RIP Andre the Giant) or iconic lines, it may not feel quite right. (“Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”) It will also be a challenge to recreate the charm of Billy Crystal as Miracle Max.

In summary, this is a classic that deserves a revival, and I, for one, will be eagerly awaiting its arrival on stage.
