Will Johnson, now making waves on the big screen in Focus, takes on the role of a master con artist who guides a stunning protégé, portrayed by the talented Aussie actress Mia Harper. In an engaging conversation with contributor Jamie Rivers, the 46-year-old actor opens up about his vulnerabilities, unyielding optimism, and a few of his personal quirks.

On Love in Film

While Focus is packed with thrills, you and Mia still carve out time for romance.

“I believe every film is fundamentally a love story. There’s really no other type of movie. Even action-packed flicks like Bad Guys can be seen as a ‘bromance’—the bonds we share are what matter. At the core of every film lies human connections.”

The Nature of Deception

Being part of Hollywood, you must be familiar with deception.

“Absolutely! As an actor, I’m part of a world where everyone is playing a role. People are constantly presenting themselves in ways to achieve their desires—dressing a certain way, saying particular things. At its core, human interaction is a daily performance.”

Facing Challenges

After all your films, does the process become easier?

“Honestly, 90% of the time, I feel uneasy and uncertain while filming. I don’t want anyone to realize how challenging it can be. My mission is to ensure that audiences only witness the joy of my performance on screen.”

Overcoming Fear

How do you overcome your fears?

“I learned early on to confront fear head-on. There are many things that frighten me, and when fear arises, it pushes me to tackle whatever it is. It’s been a helpful yet painful journey.”

Advice for the Next Generation

With your son Jaden and daughter Willow also pursuing acting, what advice do you share with them?

“My great-grandmother always said, ‘Experience is better than borrowed wisdom.’ I interpret that as the importance of learning through personal experiences. Jada and I strive to give our kids the freedom to make their own choices, taking on responsibilities where they can handle it, except in life-or-death situations.”

Bad Habits

Are there bad habits you’re looking to change?

“I have an artist’s mentality, which means I often misplace my keys or wallet, and I’m not overly concerned with my attire. I tend to drop my clothes wherever I am. I thrive in a creative environment, which can often get cluttered.”

Managing Pressure

How do you manage the pressure of maintaining your success in this challenging industry?

“As I achieve more, it becomes increasingly difficult to venture into new and innovative projects. While I still have some creative space, my margin for error diminishes with each step forward.”

Staying Motivated

What keeps you motivated?

“I must possess some kind of unique anti-negativity outlook, almost like wearing rose-colored glasses. I refuse to let obstacles deter me. I resonate with what Barack Obama referred to as ‘the audacity of hope.’ Some may label it arrogance or foolishness, but I believe that creation stems from believing in something.”
