It’s your time to shine as the coolest parent ever by helping your kids construct the most incredible snow fort imaginable. This project won’t be a walk in the park; prepare for some challenges, sore muscles, and perhaps a few broken ice blocks. However, once it’s complete, you’ll rightfully claim your throne as the ruler of winter fun!
Supplies You’ll Need:
- Tupperware or empty plastic food containers
- A box of non-toxic food coloring
- A whisk
- A large bucket or plastic sled
- Plenty of snow
- Waterproof gloves and warm clothing
- Optional: Extension cord and outdoor lights
Step 1: Find a Chilly Locale
Living in a place where temperatures plunge is ideal. The colder, the better!
Step 2: Embrace Cabin Fever
Spend ample time indoors, avoiding social events. A bit of boredom will make this project seem like an exciting escape.
Step 3: Maximize Procrastination
Engage in a profession that allows for distraction. Personally, I find that writing a book offers plenty of opportunities for putting things off!
Step 4: Collect Your Containers
Gather every Tupperware you can find. If you’re feeling adventurous, grab a few packs of takeout containers from a local store.
Step 5: Mix the Color
Add a few drops of non-toxic food coloring to each container and fill it with water. Whisk until the dye dissolves completely.
Step 6: Transport the Liquid
Take the container outside, and be careful not to spill any colorful liquid on your clothes. If it’s snowing, cover the container. If a neighbor gives you a puzzled look, just wave and smile!
Repeat steps 5 and 6 until your Tupperware is empty. Encourage your kids to join in, accepting the colorful chaos with open arms.
Step 7: Freeze the Blocks
Be patient! It may take a day or two for the ice to set. If possible, cram some into your freezer to speed things up.
Step 8: Release the Blocks
Soak the bottom of each container in warm water to help release your ice blocks. Store them in a shaded outdoor area. Repeat steps 5-8 until you’ve created a mountain of ice blocks—our last project required around 475!
Step 9: It’s Building Time!
Bring your family outside and ensure everyone is dressed in waterproof attire. This stage is messy but incredibly fun! Mix snow and water to create “mortar” using a sled.
Step 10: Construct Your Fort
Use your colorful ice blocks along with the mortar to shape your fort. Smear extra mortar over the blocks to secure them together. Stagger the blocks for added stability and visual appeal.
For a festive touch, leave a hole for an extension cord and light up your creation with outdoor lights. Invite neighbors for an awkward socially-distanced lighting ceremony while playing the Olympic Fanfare!
