Dear Pandemic Baby,

happy babyAt home insemination kit

Hello, my sweet little one. Here we are, navigating a pandemic that took me by surprise during your pregnancy. This year has been filled with dark clouds, yet you are the radiant ray of sunshine amidst it all.

There’s so much to discuss regarding this past year, but today, I want to share my thoughts on what “normal life” means. You may have heard us mention it, often starting with phrases like, “When this is all over…” or “After COVID.” Your siblings might say, “When the germs go away…”

For us, normal life includes family gatherings, playdates, shopping trips, big birthday celebrations, and inviting friends over for dinner. It’s enjoying pizza or pancakes at a restaurant, flipping through books in a bookstore, and visiting children’s museums. Yes, that’s our version of normal life.

However, for you, my pandemic baby, your normal is defined by pandemic life. You entered the world wearing masks, and the first time you saw my face, I was masked and distant. Your world has been tranquil but limited—no Christmas gatherings with cousins, no travels, and only a handful of people have held you.

Yet, since your birth in August, I must remind myself that we have spent precious time together in a slower-paced environment, and I believe you cherish that.

As we all yearn for the return of normal life, I wonder how you will adapt when everything changes. I eagerly anticipate the new experiences awaiting you, the many people who will meet you in person, and the joy of seeing your lovely smile light up their faces.

But it’s perfectly okay if adjusting to this new normal takes time. It took us a while to get here, and I’m still navigating it myself. You, dear baby, are just beginning your journey.

So, when the time comes for our “normal life” to return, it’s alright if you wish for the quiet moments back. It’s fine if you prefer just family around and find the new experiences overwhelming. We will face all these changes together, just like we will embrace every version of normal life throughout our lives.

You know what? I believe you will navigate this transition with remarkable strength and grace. Why? Because pandemic babies like you are incredibly resilient. You were born into a world full of uncertainty, and yet you bring such light. Keep shining, my beautiful baby.

With all my love,
Your devoted parent
