Raise your hand if you’ve been waiting ages for a streaming service to add ‘The Nanny’! Fran Fine is making her grand entrance from Flushing, Queens, to HBO Max, and the sound you hear is every thirtysomething millennial squealing with joy. Yes, you heard it right! Fran, Mr. Sheffield, Niles the butler, Cece Babcock, and the rest of the Sheffield crew will be available for binge-watching starting April 1.

A Quick Recap

For a quick recap (how DARE you forget), ‘The Nanny’ aired from 1993-1999. Fran Drescher played the stylish bridal saleswoman turned unexpected nanny who brightened the lives of the Sheffield kids after their mother’s passing. The charming slow-burn romance between Fran and Mr. Sheffield was both delightful and hilarious. The all-star cast, including Niles, Cece, Fran’s mom Sylvia, and the Sheffield children, made the show a true gem.

Exciting Announcement

Queen Fran Drescher herself announced the exciting news on Instagram yesterday—can we just take a moment to appreciate her glow? “We coming to HBOMAX WooHoo!!! 4/1/21 GO!” she wrote in her post.

Back in April 2020, Drescher shared with E! News that she believes Fran and Max—who finally tied the knot after seasons of will-they-won’t-they—would still be together today. She imagines Fran working in fashion or politics, saying, “I think Fran would have gotten involved in a fashion blog on how to look like a million bucks on a shoestring budget” or perhaps even local politics, as she always championed the underdog.

Broadway Musical Adaptation

But wait, there’s more! Drescher is currently working on adapting the show into a Broadway musical, with support from her ex-husband and co-creator Peter Marc Jacobson and Rachel Bloom of ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.’ This is a fabulous way to welcome audiences back to the theater—especially since Mr. Sheffield is a Broadway producer, of course.

Drescher described the concept: “Peter came up with the brilliant idea that Fran and Max moved back to New York because he missed Broadway. Fran suggests, ‘Why don’t you do a show about us?’” The first season would revolve around him producing a Broadway show based on their lives.

Nostalgic Comfort

This series is a warm, nostalgic comfort during tough times. A Broadway adaptation is something to eagerly anticipate, but for now, we’re thrilled to see the original series available for streaming. As the theme song reminds us, “Who would have guessed that the girl we described was just exactly what the doctor prescribed?”
