If you’re an animal enthusiast, you totally get where I’m coming from. (And I can’t express how much I appreciate you!) But if you’re not, you might be thinking, “What on earth?” And that’s perfectly fine! I don’t expect everyone to understand, but yes … I converse with my pet as if they were a person, and I find nothing odd about it.
To be completely honest, I engage with all animals as if they were people, not just my own pet. Sometimes I greet the squirrels scurrying across my path in the morning or politely ask the NYC pigeons to step aside while I walk. I mean… don’t we all?
Understanding Animal Communication
It’s not unusual! Despite what you might believe, animals can comprehend us. Sure, some choose to ignore us blatantly, like my uncle’s aloof cat. However, generally speaking, especially if they’re your pet, they listen and understand. Research has demonstrated that dogs, for instance, “first assess the emotional aspect of language before processing its meaning”—much like humans do, according to National Geographic. “[D]ogs interpret tone and language in two distinct areas of their brains, similar to humans. In other words, what you say to your dog—and how you say it—truly matters.”
So, chatting with your pet isn’t strange; in fact, it’s strange if you don’t. I recently came across a Facebook debate asking if people say goodbye to their pets before leaving for the day or weekend, and I was genuinely shocked by how many said no.
Why Communication Matters
Why wouldn’t you talk to your pet? Why wouldn’t you inform them not to expect you home later because you’re going on a date? They are aware of your routine and may worry if you don’t return, right?
Pets are like children—at least to some degree.
In my somewhat controversial view, they deserve to be treated and spoken to as if they were little humans. They need to grasp what’s happening. Would you leave your child with someone else for the weekend without at least trying to explain why or where you’re headed? I certainly hope not!
A Personal Story
If you think I’m joking about how much our pets pay attention to our routines, let me share a story: the day before I filmed that TikTok, my aunt left for the weekend without informing her cat. When she returned, Goldie refused to lie in her bed, which she usually does. I chuckled when she recounted the tale because I immediately understood what transpired. That cat was not happy.
This is precisely why I converse with animals! They too possess feelings and can worry. Scientific evidence aside, haven’t you seen “The Secret Life of Pets?”
So yes, I talk to my pets—and all animals—because I want them to feel secure around me, just as I would for a child in my presence. Because, like kids, they can understand us… even if they don’t respond nearly as much.
