Disney has been hinting at an Enchanted sequel for quite some time, with its announcement dating back to 2020. During the D23 Expo, the studio unveiled a plethora of updates, including a fresh trailer for Hocus Pocus 2, confirmation of Inside Out 2, and an exciting full trailer for Disenchanted. Now, just weeks ahead of the film’s release, Disney has provided an even deeper dive into the details of Disenchanted.

Set 15 years after the original film, Disenchanted follows the happily-ever-after lives of Giselle (played by Amy Adams) and Robert (Patrick Dempsey). The family, including Robert’s teenage daughter Morgan (Gabrielle Baldacchino), relocates from bustling New York City to a more tranquil suburban setting. In the latest trailer, Giselle receives a wishing wand from Nancy (Idina Menzel) and Prince Edward (James Marsden), which prompts her to wish for a life straight out of a fairy tale. However, she soon realizes that “happily ever after” is not a permanent state, especially when her everyday challenges, like confronting local queen bee Malvina Monroe (Maya Rudolph), become increasingly complicated by magic.

The trailer hints that the family’s new abode is a “fixer-upper,” to say the least. Giselle grapples with mundane chores and begins to yearn for the enchanting world she left behind. When she makes a wish for just that, chaos ensues. New characters are introduced, including those played by Rudolph, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Jayma Mays. Back in May 2021, Rudolph revealed her role as the film’s antagonist, which is evident when she sarcastically informs Giselle that she can’t assist with her dilapidated home because she “deals with slightly more upscale homes.”

“I wished for a fairy tale life and it’s all gone terribly wrong,” she ominously tells Morgan, adding, “… or terribly right.” Edward encourages Giselle to use magic to solve her dilemmas, stating, “If your world is not to your liking, then you must change it.” This raises the question: Is Giselle on a path to becoming a different fairy tale archetype — perhaps the evil stepmother? Or will she redefine what “Happily Ever After” truly means?

In April, fans learned more about Disenchanted, featuring the beloved cast from the original alongside newcomers like Maya Rudolph, Oscar Nuñez, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Jayma Mays. On May 17, Disney shared a first-look image from the film, showcasing a confrontation between Adams’ Giselle and Rudolph’s Malvina Monroe. It was also confirmed that Menzel, who voices Elsa from the iconic Frozen, will have her own song in the movie. “I’m really excited because these songs by Stephen Schwartz and Alan Menken are incredible,” Menzel told People. “There’s so much music, and Amy [Adams] singing her heart out, along with Patrick [Dempsey] singing and tap dancing. It’s really glorious and joyful, and people are going to love it.”

James Marsden echoed this sentiment, noting, “It was a crime that in the first film, she was in a musical and didn’t get to sing.” He assured fans that they have raised the bar with original music from Schwartz and Menken. Adams, who plays Giselle, confirmed that the film is packed with even more singing and dancing than the original. “The last time I danced this much was in my 20s, and now I’m not in my 20s,” Adams said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “It feels different in your 40s, but in my heart, I feel like I’m still in my 20s.”

For those new to the Enchanted storyline, the original film follows Giselle (Adams), who is banished from her fairy tale, animated life to the real world of New York City by a jealous queen. As she navigates this new reality, she meets Robert (Dempsey), a cynical divorce lawyer who changes her perspective on love. The sequel picks up 15 years later as Giselle and Robert transition from city life to the suburbs with their teenage daughter Morgan. “I hope fans of the original Enchanted will be pleased with this sequel. It has been a long time coming,” Marsden said.
