Alena’s mother, Daphne McQuarter, noticed her daughter’s extraordinary abilities at a young age. “Alena was gifted,” she said. “She was reading chapter books by age 3.” After experiencing some bullying due to her talents, Daphne chose to homeschool Alena. By fifth grade, Alena returned to traditional schooling while also tackling advanced high school courses at home. With the onset of the pandemic, Alena took advantage of her free time and graduated high school at the young age of 12.
In addition to her academic achievements, Alena has dedicated time to empowering other girls of color interested in STEM through her organization, The Brown STEM Girl. This initiative aims to assist minority students with strong educational backgrounds and a passion for STEM careers. “Only 5% of the science and engineering workforce consists of women of color,” Alena points out. “I want my work to uplift communities of color and those underserved in healthcare.”
She aspires to focus on viral immunology and advocate for underrepresented communities lacking proper healthcare. “A big part of my passion is helping those in need,” Alena said.
