Memorable Parenting Moments: The Ones We Can’t Shake Off
Several weeks ago, my children stumbled upon our family photo albums, which prominently feature their baby years. Among the cherished images, there were also a few rather questionable photos from a pre-parenthood trip to Ireland with friends. They “discovered” the albums, although they have long occupied a shelf in our dining room, often overlooked and ignored like background noise in our lives.
When my eldest child was born, I fixated on every milestone, meticulously documenting each moment. His first smile, laugh, and tooth were celebrated as if they marked historical events. I shared photographs of his developmental milestones, like rolling over and crawling, with family and friends who, frankly, had little interest in my child’s journey through mashed bananas.
Parenting literature emphasized the importance of these milestones, suggesting I would cherish these memories. However, as I reflect on those early years, I realize that the conventional milestones aren’t what I remember most vividly. I can barely recall my sons’ first words or the specifics of their milestones. Surprisingly, I find I don’t feel the need to remember them.
Recently, an article by Emma Grant resonated with me as it explored the lasting moments of early parenthood that mothers hold close, even if their children won’t remember them. It poignantly articulated that it’s often the intimate, personal experiences we treasure—like gentle kisses or cozy cuddle sessions. While I might not remember any tickle fests, I certainly have my own collection of unforgettable moments such as dancing together and long walks in the stroller.
However, intertwined with these sweet memories are numerous parenting experiences I cannot forget, no matter how hard I might wish to. For instance:
- The first time my child had a bowel movement in the bathtub.
- The initial public vomiting incident, which was followed by an even more memorable experience of him vomiting on me.
- The diaper blowout that necessitated scissors to remove his onesie from my lap.
- The first shower I took alone at home while he played in another room—a guilty, hurried affair.
- The enlightening call from his teacher about his use of inappropriate language at preschool.
- The moment I caught him exploring his own body—prompting a mix of confusion and acceptance.
- The first time he uttered a curse word, which left me fighting back laughter.
Despite the chaotic nature of parenthood, I anticipate some of these moments may slip from my memory as time goes on. Nevertheless, I will always have this list to jog my memory.
