There’s No Such Thing As “That Kind of Person”
You know, one thing that really struck me recently was a memory of seeing two people out and about—let’s call them Jamie and Alex—in a drugstore in New York City, ages ago. I can’t recall exactly where, but I do remember Jamie was walking a tiny dog (turns out the pup’s name was Twinkle, according to the memoirs I read later).
It’s funny how fame works; people often remember the briefest encounters with celebrities. I still think it’s wild that I can recall seeing them for just a moment, all those years back.
What stood out to me was how serious they seemed. They were whispering in deep voices and looked quite somber. I thought, maybe they save their funny side for the stage. Or perhaps they wanted to blend in because of their fame. In fact, it might have been the very day Jamie received some tough news from the doctor. While I was just having a regular day with a sprinkle of excitement from seeing a celebrity, it could have been one of their darkest moments.
This is a classic example of what’s known as the fundamental attribution error. It’s that tendency we all have to overthink others’ behaviors based on who we think they are, rather than considering the situation they might be in. I assumed Jamie and Alex were acting that way because of their personalities, without realizing they might have been dealing with something significant.
This brings to mind a great reminder: always give people some grace. When someone seems irritable, unfriendly, or distracted, it rarely reflects their true selves or has anything to do with you. Just don’t take things personally! As the wise Henri-Frédéric Amiel said, “Life is short, and we never have enough time for the hearts of those who travel the way with us. O, be swift to love! Make haste to be kind.”

In summary, we all have our struggles, and it’s important to remember that everyone has their own battles we might not see. Let’s strive to be kinder to one another.
