Just Call Me (Or, Why I Don’t Want to Attend Your Gender Reveal Party)
Congratulations to all the expectant moms out there! You’ve already turned this special time in your life—which is rightfully all about you—into yet another occasion that’s, surprise!—still centered around you. It’s just one more hallmark of our culture that seems to revel in self-celebration.
This trend of gender reveal parties has become a staple of our self-absorbed society, joining the likes of selfies and elaborate prom proposals. It’s essentially a gathering where everyone is invited to discover whether your little bundle of joy will be a boy or a girl. A quick online search reveals countless ways to unveil this news to your friends and family: cake cutting, balloon releases, or even the awkward reveal of a belly ribbon.
Let’s be honest: most of your friends and family probably have a pretty good guess about the gender already. When my friend Lisa recently shared a photo of her sonogram with a simple “It’s a girl!” sign, we celebrated over the phone—a moment that felt just as special without the need for party decorations.
Don’t get me wrong—I adore babies! They make me giddy. I love everything about them and have even spent years as my church’s nursery director just to get my fix of baby cuddles. New life is something magical, and having a baby is a profound experience that deserves to be celebrated.
I’m all in for showering you with kindness during your pregnancy: asking how you’re feeling, bringing you treats, and even offering to babysit once your little one arrives. We all want you to feel cherished during this transformative time, and you absolutely should.
But can we take a step back? Is it possible to be satisfied with the attention you’re already receiving from loved ones without needing to host an event? Can we celebrate you because we genuinely want to, not because it’s part of a trend?
So, if you’re tempted to go all out with a gender reveal party, I have just one request: please don’t include me. Just give me a call instead.

In summary, while I’m all for celebrating new life, I’d prefer to skip the elaborate gender reveal parties. A simple phone call will do just fine!
