If The Breakfast Club Were Parents Today
Ah, the ’80s! That quintessential era filled with neon colors, unforgettable music, and films that defined a generation. One of those iconic movies is The Breakfast Club. If you were a teen back then, you probably know every word of that haunting theme song. I was 14 when it hit theaters, grappling with my own teenage turmoil, much like my peers. The Breakfast Club struck a chord with us Gen Xers, as it was one of the first films to portray our struggles as authentic and relatable.
Now, with the 30th anniversary of The Breakfast Club upon us, I found myself pondering what those beloved characters would be like as parents. Did Claire the Princess gasp in disbelief at her first diaper disaster? Did Andy the Athlete ever wonder why his baby was wailing non-stop? Did Brian the Brain become the go-to guy for math help, or would he still be baffled by modern homework? And what about Allison the Basket Case? Would she fret whenever her child struggled to fit in?
Here’s my imaginative take on how these characters might navigate parenthood today:
The Brain
Let’s call him Kevin. These days, Kevin is a dedicated Scoutmaster and a Deacon at his local church. He loves guiding his kids through science fairs, and last year, his daughter’s hovercraft project took home multiple awards. Talk about proud dad moments!
The Athlete
Meet Jake, who has two sons juggling travel teams in football, basketball, and baseball. He’s the head coach for most of their teams and spends his summers ferrying them to elite sports camps. His job lets him sneak out early for all those games, ensuring he never misses a moment.
The Basket Case
Here’s where we introduce Sarah. After dabbling in everything from homeschooling to extreme couponing, she’s now a successful mommy blogger with a following of nearly 80,000 on social media. She’s even landed features on major platforms and is working on her first book.
The Princess
We have Emily, a stay-at-home mom who loves volunteering in her kids’ classrooms and recently wrapped up her term as PTA secretary. She’s also a tennis enthusiast and is active in her local Junior League.
The Criminal
Last but not least, there’s Max. He’s a hardworking tradesman and a divorced dad to one. When he’s not at work, he’s cheering for his son at basketball games, sometimes running into Emily because their kids play on the same team.
So, what do you think? How would The Breakfast Club characters fare in the world of parenting?
Now, if you’ll excuse me, it’s time to dig out my leg warmers, jellies, and maybe even a hidden stash of New Coke.
